Inspired by a Name: Empress Theodora
The Visitor Center is named after Empress Theodora, the wife of Emperor Justinian I. As one of the most influential women in world history, Theodora was a woman of unwavering will and strong character who ruled as an equal alongside the Emperor.
Her fascinating personality continues to inspire artists today. Every July, the center and the archaeological site host the “Caričin Grad” Art Colony. Artists from Serbia, Europe, and across the world gather here to create works inspired by Theodora’s beauty and the mystique of the Byzantine era.
Legends and History
Staying at the Visitor Center is an opportunity to step back into the 6th century. In addition to the historical facts recorded by the chronicler Procopius, this region preserves living legends.
Did you know? The most famous local legend tells a romantic story of a forbidden and tragic love between the Emperor’s daughter and a poor swineherd from a nearby village
